TIPS AND TOOLS FOR SUCCESS FOR THE LIVE WELL KITSAP TRANSFORMATION EVENT

WEEK 6. SOCIAL | RELATIONAL | COMMUNITY WELLBEING

PRO TIPS FROM THE LWK TEAM

RE: GENERAL INFO AND REMINDERS ABOUT SOCIAL/RELATIONAL/COMMUNITY WELLBEING:

If the pandemic has taught us anything it is that we all need one another more than we may have realized. We are humans that need other humans to thrive.  Even those who are more introverted, still need to see and experience the interactions and connection that only another human being can provide. Rather than seeing that as a weakness, embrace the idea that we all do better together.  This area of wellbeing is easy to ignore with our own nuclear family roles and responsibilities. We hope you will find safe and meaningful ways to connect with safe others.

RE: WAYS TO CONNECT

Rather than wait for an invitation, perhaps you might be the one to reach out to friends, adult children, grandchildren or other extended family to connect on a regular basis either safely socially distances, or virtually.  Invite your friend or family member to a weekly facetime chat or if they are local to walk or just spend time together.

Other ways to connect with the people at home: Be sure to keep having date nights with your partner or spouse once a week, or however often you both desire. Take turns planning what you might do. Rather than think there is nothing to do or nowhere to go, get creative. Dressing up even to have take out is one way to differentiate every day roles and responsibilities from “this is our fun time.”

If you are single, or living alone, use this time to reach out to others for connection as often as you feel the need.  Create some nights or days that are just for you and filled with your favorite things. Even getting on facetime or zoom to share an activity with someone can be meaningful especially if they are not local. You might cook a recipe together, read from the same book, look at old photos together- it is not as important what you do as it is that you connect.

RE: A CAUSE OR PASSION PROJECT

One way to get past a hump in our own attitudes, outlook or isolation is to reach out to discover where we can be of service in the Community. There are always agencies, charities and organizations that need our help if we are willing. This is also an opportunity to engage this kids and connect with the community for a cause. Consider what that might look like for you to invest yourself in something bigger than yourself and serve others.

RE: RELATIONAL / FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS

The pandemic has also brought to light how difficult and dysfunctional some of our relationships are. Pandemic life and quarantine is made harder when we feel like we are distant from the people in our home or when communication is so broken we are carrying around a lot of extra stress.  If this describes you, we urge you to seek the help of a marriage or family therapist or counselor that can help you get back on a path to satisfying and safe communications and interactions in your home.  Use this time to improve your relationships and family life.

More pro tips… In your conversations, try listening with an open and curious mind during your next marital or family conversation. Rather than reacting in your usual ways, just take a breath and repeat back to your partner, child, or friend what you are hearing them say.  Then later, come back and share your thoughts and feelings on the matter. Notice if this helps your relationship and check in with the other person to get their feedback as well.
