In the Midst of the Chaos - Create Mini Celebrations!

Is life feeling more chaotic and confusing than ever?  Is your personal life feeling overwhelming and out of control? When you think about events in our country and in the world, does your distress level immediately go up?

I think it’s fair to say that you are not alone.  In fact, from hearing so many people’s stories, I’d say you are in good company.

The old saying misery loves company may apply here, yet it offers little solace to those suffering with increased distress, anxiety, depression.

Life feels overwhelming for many of us right now.

And yet… we are still here, in this place, in your family, at your job or business, at this moment.

And that is where celebration comes in.  We have to learn and practice embracing what we can control. Remembering to be grateful for the big and small blessings is a good place to start.

But celebration takes that one step further.  And by celebration, we don’t mean indulge in substances that temporarily make you feel “better” but then hurt you in the long run…

A celebration can look like intentionally carving out some quiet time, taking a walk in the park or on a hiking trail, playing a round of golf, or even buying yourself some flowers.

In other words, we’re not talking an expensive trip, elaborate party, or excuse to overindulge… but rather creating moments of mini celebrations.

Celebrations can be loud, or they can be quiet- or even silent.

The point is, celebrating the big and small things in our lives reminds us of the things we can accomplish both alone and together, and it takes us away from, what is for some, constant worry or rumination.

To celebrate is to notice what is good, what is meaningful and what matters.

So beyond celebrating the obvious – birthdays, anniversaries, babies, Christmas, New Years … consider what some mini celebrations may look like for you.

Treat yourself in some small way every day to celebrate your life, your love and the person you are- someone worthy of celebrating.  Celebrations can also remind you that you matter.

Consider also, celebrating your partner, your child or a friend- not just for the big things they accomplish, but to just show that you see them and appreciate them.

Celebrating others conveys, “I see you and I’m glad you are on planet earth right now”.

Let’s control what we can and remind ourselves that life and every day we have here is precious.  There will always be things out of our control or our influence.  Let’s control what we can and ought to control… Finding gratitude in simple things.

Life is short- Live it Well.  And Celebrate it- Often.
